History: The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed in Southern Africa by crossing European hunting dogs with native Khoikhoi dogs. They were bred to track and hold large game like lions at bay until the hunter arrived, hence the nickname "African Lion Hound." Their loyalty and protective instincts also made them excellent home guardians. The breed’s signature feature is the ridge of hair along its spine growing in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. Today, they are cherished as both athletic companions and devoted family protectors.
