Coat Type: Hairless (smooth skin with tufts of hair on the head, tail, and feet) or Powderpuff (long, soft, and silky double coat). Despite their name, not all Chinese Cresteds are hairless—both types can be born in the same litter.

Coat Colors: White, Black, Blue, Chocolate, Cream, Pink & Slate—often with unique skin markings or multicolored coats.

Temperament: Chinese Cresteds are affectionate, gentle, and very people-oriented. They love being close to their family and often prefer snuggling on the couch over being left alone for long periods. Many are playful and a little silly, and they usually do well with kids and other pets when introduced calmly. The hairless variety also needs a little extra care, since their skin can be sensitive to sun and cold, but their personality is typically sweet and devoted.

Energy Level: Moderate. This breed enjoys short bursts of play and thrives with daily companionship and light exercise. They’re well-suited for apartment living and do not require large outdoor spaces.

Trainability: High. Intelligent and eager to please, the Chinese Crested responds well to gentle, positive reinforcement training. Their sensitivity makes harsh corrections counterproductive.

Barking Tendency: Low to Moderate. They may alert to strangers but are not typically excessive barkers.

Lifespan: 13-18 years

Health Issues: Dental Issues (especially in hairless types), Luxating Patella, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, and skin sensitivities such as sunburn or acne. Regular dental care and sun protection are important for this breed.

Exercise Requirements: Low to Moderate. Enjoys indoor play and short walks. They’re often content snuggling and spending time with their owners.

History: The Chinese Crested’s origins are believed to trace back to hairless African dogs, which were then refined and bred as companion animals by Chinese traders and sailors. These dogs were favored aboard ships for controlling vermin and as loyal companions. Over centuries, the breed’s unique look and loving personality made it a cherished lapdog among aristocracy. Today, the breed is known worldwide for its exotic appearance, loyal disposition, and suitability for people with allergies.
